The Big Rapids repeater site is key to the IRA link system. All signals from Ludington, Cadillac, Traverse City, Vanderbilt, and Mt Pleasant, are relayed through the Big Rapids site to Grand Rapids.
The tower for the current Big Rapids repeater was scheduled to come down. This required a new tower to be put up at a near by location. All antennas, transmission line, and repeaters had to be removed from the original site and installed at the new site. On January 4, eight antennas were taken down, along with the hardline. On January 5, six antennas and feedlines were installed on the new tower. We were able to use three of the old antennas, but needed to install three new antennas.
Members of the IRA spent many hours planning and working on the move. New antenna brackets had to be designed and fabricated, since the new tower had different leg diameters.
The repeater equipment was moved January 12-13, restoring the repeater to active status.
The cost of this unplanned move to the IRA was over $4200.00. We are asking all hams that use, listen to, or support the IRA link system to make donations to this project. The IRA is a 501(c) 3 organization and your donations are tax deductible,.
